Mette Marcussen

PhD student part time

Education: Dentist (Copenhagen University). Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Aalborg University Hospital)

Work area: Chemo- and radiotherapy induced toxicity of the oral and gastro-intestinal mucosa is one of the most painful and complicating side effects of cancer treatment with primarily palliative measures at hand. Important knowledge of molecular reactions in the mucosa during anticancer therapy has evolved mainly from animal or other preclinical models. Potential preventive interventions have been tested with promising results in these models; however, few have been translated into clinical care. The concept behind my PhD is that molecular analysis of human mucosa is mandatory to understand pathogenesis and classification of mucositis

PhD project: Cancer therapy induced mucositis; Molecular studies on consecutive human mucosa biopsies during anti-cancer treatment.
