Work area: The aim of my work is to generate a classification system of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) that associates normal B-cell subset phenotypes with disease stage and prognosis.

The expectations are that B-cell associated gene signature subtyping may offer diagnostic advantages towards individualized therapy of patients with CLL.

During the summer of 2015 I will be working at the Department of Hematology in Aalborg and from September 2015-June 2016 I will continue my research at Stanford University Medical Center.

Work area: Working with, initiating, performing and supervising laboratory based research projects within haematology with specific focus on B cell lymphoproliferative malignancies. The pathogenesis of non-Hodgkin Lymphomas is of my particular interest prompting studies of lymphoma genesis-causing genes, the role of cellular hierarchy on tumour development and interactions between tumour and host. In that context, I am responsible for the central molecular and genetic techniques including nucleotide extraction and amplification, PCR, q-PCR, fragment analyses, genetic and epigenetic screens and cell-laboratory facilities.

Area of interest:  Determination of mechanisms controlling and catalyzing initiation and development of non-Hodgkin Lymphomas is of special interest to me. Therefore, I am involved in 1) genetic/epigenetic studies of specific genes and microRNAs, 2) determination of gene expression patterns of both single genes, whole genome profiling of mRNA transcripts and microRNAs, 3) protein expression and localization and 4) characterization of various cellular sub-populations of cell line, primary cell and clinical specimen origin.

In particular I have been working with methods for detecting differential exon usage from microarray data. In my master thesis, methods for detecting differential exon usage will be considered in an next generation sequencing setup.

Master thesis: My master thesis is written in collaboration with Department of Haematology and Department of Mathmatical Sciences in Aalborg. The theme of the project is next generation sequencing, and the thesis will include downstream and upstream workflow assessments.

Work area: Chemo- and radiotherapy induced toxicity of the oral and gastro-intestinal mucosa is one of the most painful and complicating side effects of cancer treatment with primarily palliative measures at hand. Important knowledge of molecular reactions in the mucosa during anticancer therapy has evolved mainly from animal or other preclinical models. Potential preventive interventions have been tested with promising results in these models; however, few have been translated into clinical care. The concept behind my PhD is that molecular analysis of human mucosa is mandatory to understand pathogenesis and classification of mucositis

Work area: My research is focused on implementing the B-cell-associated gene signature (BAGS) classification system for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Using novel gene expression technologies, I am working towards the implementation of gene expression profiling as a routine clinical tool for prognosis and treatment guidance for DLBCL patients.

I am also applying high-dimensional bioinformatics and correlation network analysis to uncover the underlying biology of BAGS assigned DLBCL subtypes as mechanisms of pathogenesis, signaling pathways, and genetic abnormalities.
